Welcome to the blog! This site was built during my time studying folklore and applied heritage studies in Estonia. In addition to being a researcher in humanities, I’m a part of the Ukrainian diaspora and a crafter of Ukrainian textiles. The initial purpose of this site was to document my MA project, which includes making my own folk dress and reflection on the process. This resulted in two main aims for this site: (1) to serve as a space for me to reflect on my own Ukrainian identity and how I arrived at this project, and (2) to map out my journey in crafting a folk dress based on that of my family’s hometown, Sniatyn (Ukraine). The outcome of this work demonstrated this identity—craft relationship and culminated in receiving my MA degree with flying colors. The pages of my blog deal with topics like my family history, how my Ukrainian identity interacts with other parts of my life, and how I researched + crafted a few different parts of the Sniatyn folk dress. As such, this blog focuses a lot on how I researched, planned, and learned how to craft this folk dress. For readers, this blog might be useful to those interested in Ukrainian textiles; those who are looking to make their own folk dress when time, budget, and modernization are factors to consider; and those who may simply be interested in different ways to connect to heritage. With time, I hope that this blog may also be a source of inspiration for heritage crafters.
